H a p p y H a l l o w e e n !
I made a vintage-style apron with ghosts, spiders and goblins. I'm wearing this Halloween night to give out treats (or tricks)! The neighborhood kids know me as the "spider lady" on Halloween. I have spiders in my hair and on my fingers. Spiders crawl on my shoulders and now they are creeping all over this apron. The kids are sure to be spooked!
And what a spider this turned out to be! I have to embellish! I machine needle felted the apron bib and spun a spider by manipulating the wool roving. He turned out so spooky he had to have a spider web and he's caught a cocoon.!
Here are some close up shots of the needle felted areas. Materials used were hand-dyed scrim (orange), orange and black wool roving, white chiffon, light green organza, yellow angelina fibers (makes it shiny). Yarns were also used in variegated colors of orange, yellow and blue.
Machine needle felting is so easy and fun -- I just put all of these materials serendipitously under a layer of tulle (you can use netting) and started the felting process. I used craft felt as a base and once the embellishments were secure, I removed the tulle (netting) and continued felting. The tulle/netting helps prevent the small embellish pieces from getting tangled in the needles when you first begin to felt.
Plastic spiders were attached to the pockets using black DMC floss. The needle felted bib and pockets were stitched with nylon thread for durability.
I'm also wearing this to work on Halloween. We're allowed to dress up and many of us love to do so. I'm going as the 1950s housewife hooked on Valium -- I'm kind of wacky. I'm curling my hair and wearing a fascinator (hat) and of course, pearls. I'm carrying a martini glass and I have a pill bottle that says, "1950s Housewife, Valium 1000 mgs, Take one every hour, prescribed by Dr. Jack Kevorkian." ALL IN FUN! -- It's just skittles in the bottle.
Here's a close up of the spider -- weird materials I used were - used dryer sheets sprayed with blue and orange inks and a used Dry-el sheet hand-dyed orange. I really liked using the dryer sheets; just make sure you have washed and dried them to take the chemicals out. You can tear them and place them anywhere and the sheets are translucent even when sprayed with inks.
Have a Happy Halloween. Leave me a spooky comment or two and tell me what you think of our vintage spider apron.
